Nice to see you are working on your pride & joy, just like the Cougar, you should never let them go so far as to having a tune up done, cars like those you rarely see them on the road, mostly the cars are fuel injected, with all kinds of sensors, not like Old School.
Look like the old Echlin points from the early 70s. Installed a few of those. They were the only brand the garage would use, as they had that lubricant wick. Old school still pays off. Fired up the Super Beetle yesterday. Ran fine for a minute than POP! and it quit. Points, rotor can cap looked good but I cleaned them anyway. Zip. Coils don't act like that. I had one vintage VW condenser on hand. Screwed that onto the side of the distributor and ZOOM. Well, as much as any air-cooled bug can zoom.
Hi Mustie1 Recently subscribed to your channel, I love it, particularly your VW videos. Can I clarify a popularly held misconception regarding CB points gap and dwell angle. The two are inversely proportional, i.e. a larger gap results in a smaller dwell (the period the points dwell/stay together) angle. I maybe picking you up incorrectly but during this video you seem to suggest the opposite? While we’re on misconceptions, regarding vacuum advance, when you floor the accelerator pedal, you lose/reduce manifold depression, which in turn moves the distributor base plate in the same direction of rotation as the cam, effectively moving the ignition timing to a less advanced position. I trust I am not offending anyone pointing the above out , I assure you it is not my intention, nor is it to appear a smart arse; I’m just an old retired motor engineer, who doesn’t quite yet want to give up ‘wrenching’. Thank you for a brilliant channel. When are we having some more videos on Double Trouble, would love to see that progress👍🏻🙂🙂.
When dad was teaching me to do the tuneups, he had me remove the distributor and remove all the parts, clean and reassemble with it in the bench vise, the 318 had a slot at the bottom of the shaft. The learning curve was to ensure TDC on #1 not 180 deg off. It only happens once…
I really enjoyed seeing you work on stuff that I could never do lots of laughs would love to see you restore our work on a 1957 Chevy with a 283 or a 409 thanks later
I got my project car I have had for 25+ years that I am working on too. You and Brian got my fired up to finally complete the 68 Nova I have been working on.
Watching this, I realize I didn't know as much as I thought I did when I was in my Twenties !! I often said that I would like to be young again because, then, I would know everything ! !
I remember being stranded in a store parking lot and dad used this old trick of setting the points with a matchbook. Turns out they're about .020 which is a OK all around universal setting for timing.
I find that using a product called IRISH SPRING HAND SOPE shaved with a potato peeler and placed on a paper towel on the floor of the car gets rid of the mice that like to move in. They don't like the smell of the IRISH SPRING. Don't use DECON as this product will attract the mice. Also if you place uncooked Coffee Grounds on a placed paper toweling will also get rid of the micr.

Thanks!

Awesome explanation of timing. Great video as always. So glad I stumbled on to your channel.

Pretty sure you were born an engineer- Maybe your great grand dad screwed with locomotives???
Is that an AVS? Does it have that moaning sound that a Thermoquad has when you floor it?
have you done work with diesel these days?

Isn't gas in NH blue? I think 93 was in the 2000's in summer. I know in MD the gas is orange it looks like clear gator aide.
