compression ratio was probably very high as well, could maybe have milled the piston flat on the top or at least gone down that 10 thous on it and I bet it would run fine for a quite a while.

I am 80 old, always been a mechanic, which you are top of the line, NOT A PARTS CHANGER, I am getting to old to do alot and I love watching you do it for me–LOL. A mechanic knows there is a problem and without experience or details he is fore known that he will fix it somehow. By the Grace of God this is his gift and he will perform it. Why just clearance the piston where the valve is touching. You will loose a lot of compression by adding a gasket and add potential for leak.
