For Me it was a Honda Trail 70 I bought back in the 80's and second gear had broken tooth. It was fun to repair. I also lapped the valves and did a Light oil leak down test till valves held a seal.
Giving me shivers, nightmares over the first and only time I cracked a Honds case. It was 46 years ago in a gravel driveway. I hope to never have to do that again!
When I split the motor of a moped with 3 gears after the same issue, I got a manual first to know how the gears was supposed to go together since they are synced they have to go together again in certain way. After I knew that it all went very fast and it all worked perfectly and if I would have done the same with a similar engine as in this video I would of course have done the same so everything was put together the right way at the very start.
It's real easy with a manual mustie. Plus it's real easy to misplace a washer. Or spacer. Split many cases . You just pull the shift fork pin to remove forks. But,hey nothing ventured inthe learned.!
Bad idea with the Scotch brite wheel, it won't be flat anymore after that. Straight back razor blade and take your time. Lock the blades in Vice grips if you need to.
That was gr8 effort
But next time
Get your sell a parts or shop manual with diagram
It shows each item break down
Lot simpler
feckn voodoo…scared me away from gearbox's
do u still have the old piston and cylinder? I could really use it.

Why not use it as one instead of changing parts.

I admire your patience, knowledge and skill Mustie … I would have started the disassembly, then burst into tears and ran.
