Did you bother to check if the tranie had any fluid in it before you took it to the highway and floored it? It amazing that you treat your home town cars and motorcycles so disrespectful but cherish the foreign junk.

I rebuilt a C4 trans a long time ago and put a shift kit in. It wasn't shifting at all before the work, but it was never quite right afterwards. I recently rebuilt the valve body with a new shift kit. In the process, I lost a spring, ordered a new spring, and accidentally ordered a set of check-balls. Then the "ah-ha" moment happened when I noticed the new balls were all the same size, whereas my valve body had one that was much smaller than the rest. The passenger door had an AAMCO sticker in the door jam. I called my Dad and he confirmed that AAMCO had been in there before. There's nothing worse for auto-archeology when someone else was there before and contaminated the scene.

1968 was the first year for the 302. We had a 1968 Montego with the 302

Darin, I shipped a 1971 Mustang with a 302 Automatic in it to Italy in 1974 when transferred from Fort Bragg, NC. for a 39 month overseas tour of duty. Mine looked just like yours; was the same color as yours but had a hardtop. Transmission went out on it a few months prior to my return to the states. I sold the car to some guys from the motor pool who thought they could get a transmission from an American junk yard in Germany. I don't know how they made out because I had to return to the states. It was a really nice looking car. Yours reminded me of the one I had. Too bad mine could not have held on a few more months; I could have shipped it back. I drove that car car all over Italy and Germany!

Being the crafty son of a gun that you are I thought you'd rebuild the old one yourself. I follow a YouTube creator called Hiram Gutierrez, channel's called "Automatic Transmission". He makes it look easy, I bet if you took your time you could've handled it. Thanks for the videos. Edit: I wrote the preceding before your explanation of why you didn't rebuild it, so with that said……never mind.
