while picking a farm property I found this vintage air cooled wisconsin engine under a work bench. lets see if we can bring it back to life and what it might have been used for.
So you think it came possibly from down the road at a i. You know. I really, i really don't know um yeah good guess we could have fun yeah. Well, it's a guess, um, but it may have come out of the old leather board, which was um an old factory water, water, um powered factory down on the squanacook in the center of west groton um and that's what they made was they made board out of Pressed leather and it's been out of business for a long time.
It's now uh an assisted living that they refurbished the old mail, but and they had a bunch of gas powered just for maybe with water. Wasn't they had yeah, they might have had backups. For that i don't i don't know cool, i don't know so, hey guys, how's it going we're back at the shop and we get a better look at this engine that we dug out of. I know you want to call it was in a barn.
Then it was in the basement before that, and possibly some kind of factory was the back history that she gave on this. I know nothing about it. I just pretty much put in the corner until we were ready to go film, so we will go figure it out together. Model 8 am two and a quarter by two and three quarter bore i'm guessing.
I don't know what you think. 40S, 40s 50s has a rope start. Possibly it was hooked to electric motor to go start. It got a funky carb on it, i'm not sure.
If that's original or not because it's sitting on an angle, you would think it would be level punky air cleaner. No not paper, it doesn't look like it's metal magneto for the spark. It's like somebody jewelry rigged, a throttle on it. I don't know if that's factory or not huh, that looks kind of cute wampus.
I bet you that carburetor is not the one. It came with. Glass bowl, it looks like somebody took like a testers paint jar. I shipped it up there for the float bowl.
That's not a regular. Looking setup got a gear box on it with forward in reverse. We think it's far in reverse. I think that's neutral there.
It goes neutral, let's go in the same direction, let's go in reverse, it's got a forward neutral in reverse. I don't have any kind of clutch or anything on it. I don't know what that is. If that's just a vent or that's something else, i can get adjust or something done with.
I think he said possibly it ran. It was water powered mill and then you know if the water wasn't flowing, maybe they switched over to a motor. It looks like it's been sitting a day or two huh all right. We're either gon na figure out why it was taken out of service and it doesn't run we'll, try and get it to run.
Let's get you set up in a steam, we'll start getting into it and see what we find. I guess if we start with the goo, see what it's got for gluing it there's any oil at all. She looks pretty clean huh, not that all the crap wouldn't settle out of it, but at least it has oil in it good. Let's take the plug out and see if we can get any kind of compression when we spin it over.
If i got ta get a rope or something too huh, i don't see uh. Is there a bolt in the center of that? No, i wonder if we can get some kind of socket set up, that we could spin it without having to keep wrapping a rope around it. Yeah we'll get there so get that plug out of there yeah. Let's go easy. Otherwise, it's pretty cruddy, not terrible, but it's got a lot of crap in there. I feel i feel suck and squeeze that's a good sign. Let's uh, throw that plug in there and see if we get any kind of spark, i'm kind of doubting it. I've not had good luck with magneto's, but then again, it's kind of good for one reason that uh i'll hold on one.
Second, i played with magnetos just a very little bit, but my understanding of them is not that great. So if we have an issue on this one kind of learn together how they operate at least get a better idea just trying to get a better crimp on that plug. This boot is like petrified there we go. You get a rope wrapped around here.
Get that wedged into place. You think our chances are i'm gon na say it has no spark and that's why the wire was off. I can't get a good view at oh, i can't spin it fast enough. I can throw some clamps down on it so that i can come from this side, we'll get give it a good pull, got a couple clamps on it.
I wouldn't say it's great, but it's better than flopping around like it was: let's take some oil and shoot it around the inside of the cylinder because it feels like it's really hard to pull over and it should actually just get it out. The gearbox out too spin around a couple of times when that clacks, that should kick out of spark and we're not getting anything, but let's give her a tug yeah. So you can get any kind of something with a little bit of momentum to it. We're looking right there did you flinch, all right, we're gon na clamp that puppy down a little bit better.
Well, that maybe do something i wanted to do in a while, anyway, which i just took a couple of clamps and welded, some bolts to the tip of them, and we could use them pretty much on any engine. Now we can grab where the bolt holes are clamp right around it and now it's pinned to the engine, so it doesn't want to slip off the end of it. Let's get them set up and try that again now, i'm just going to drag the whole bench across the floor. Let's see how this does i didn't see anything.
Did you i'll give her one more and then we'll open that thing up and see what makes it tick? I would think it's probably like a set of points on the inside. I do know they. They will lose magnetism too. Just one more yeah go pop.
The cover off that mag yeah, it's got a just like a regular set of points down below right there you got any light. Let's go grab a light. Take a peek: oh yeah, they're, nice they're, a nice color of corrosion huh anyway chipping off the outside. Let's give them a clean up and we'll get a better idea, whether that'll come back or not just looking at the rest of it. Seeing what how it's put together, one of the screws was missing. This screw was missing down here, whether it just vibrated out or somebody's, been in here before us, and again took this motor out of uh operation for no spark grab yourself a file clean them up, hey what are some new lights, let's just lit up there right Now kind of a little standalone magnetic ones, and then they have a little on a little one on the tip that is pointing at it right now. I know the other ones have a tendency to bleach out the the camera it's hard to tell, because when i look at the camera right now, even before it always looks okay, just when i go to look back at it later, i see it's bleached out and Every time i say i should do something about that: we'll see how it goes this time, these work out better for us, it's been a day or two since they've been clean. Let me uh grab an air gun too blow out the little debris on that we could probably use a you know.
Meter maybe make sure the circuit is opening and closing, or do you just want to go for it? Put it back together, see if we got spark and we blow it out with an air gun we'll just set that cover on with two screws and try it again. Here's that light that i was using. It says it's got one on the front of it and then it's got that and then low it's very high in the medium. But i guess we can call the phone the front low.
So let's go see how it does we'll know for the future. All right with the little front light that's high and it looks perfectly fine to me right now but later on. Sometimes it comes back bleached and that's we're gon na go with medium, we'll know for the future, which one works. The best comment: yeah: let's try it again we're looking right right.
There actually did the wire just break that doesn't help neither the end of the came right out. Let's go just shove that in there all right, it's got. Ta touch got ta make around. Here we go oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah yeah.
That seemed like it was uh like a lot of spark, though didn't it like it was like almost a constant. You would think it would just go on off on off. Let's go try that one more time. Let's see a little weird, you know what time it is we'll dribble a little bit of gas in it, put the plug down and give it a yank see what she does, that good spot for you close enough to see you, but back far enough for you Out of harm's way, let's go give her about that.
Much hope that wire's gon na stay together now all right, we'll try it like that. I think she'll go, i'm going to say maybe after the third try there we go. Oh, i see pushing a little bit of stuff out the exhaust. I did dump that oil in there too, so i'm sure that's not helping.
I think we're trying to slide on the bench. A little too doesn't feel like i get a good chug for compression. Just it's kind of like an even drag. It doesn't feel like it's you're hitting like a high spot. You know, let's uh put a gauge in there, we'll go, try it with a gauge one. More all right. I think she's gon na go with that. I know one thing that doesn't help.
I had the throttle closed. Let's open that up, so we can get some air in it and choke. I don't know which way choke is on or off. Let's go pop, this air cleaner off.
Look, it's got a just a pinch set up on the side of it. Here we go. That's closed, that's open! So now we can get some air. Let's go shoot some a little bit there a little bit there and if we don't get her to go with this, we'll start looking into compression and then like.
I said that sparks him was kind of weird to back you up a little. It just seemed like it fired constantly. Instead of you know, one shot at a time ready, awesome, awesome, yeah cool. Well.
That was a lot easier than expected. Huh, let's go see what getting the fuel system set up. Yes, that's what it was. It was just so choked off it couldn't get any air.
I still don't know why that carb is sitting on an angle. Whether that's meant to do that or maybe this thing was i don't know on a boat. Maybe maybe i was the alpha drive for a boat and the motor was on an angle and then the carburetor would be straight because that air, cleaner doesn't look right. Neither it looks like something that is a spark arrestor.
I bet you that's what it is. I wish that thing was used, maybe for a boat. I know they had some boats there too. It might be what's going on and that's why it has a throttle and no governor huh that'd be cool.
If that's what it is huh all right, let me get that carburetor off there we'll start looking into that and see what it's got for gooeys on the inside of that we're in let's go bring that puppy over the bench crack her open, clean her up, see What she, what makes her tick and we'll wash you watch that you can watch that that we're going to take apart and clean on a wire wheel and that should get washed. The float hopefully will continue to float that it, the needle's, pretty scuzzy. It's got tar on it, throw that in there i got the ultrasonic cleaner in the background humming away. I think i'm gon na go grab my little parts.
Washer coffee can and uh give that a good cleaning, so you can give it a bunch of the crap. That's on there and get us down to. I guess his original paint we're gon na go find out in a minute, i'm not sure again, maureen, i'm still kind of maybe the model. If we look it up, wisconsin aam, maybe m, is marine that air cleaner and that carburetor on an angle.
The only thing that has me is kind of sitting on an angle like that: let's go get her cleaned up, see if any other numbers or anything pop up, possibly there's another set of id or something on it. I think again with the gearbox. You got ta look into that too. So it's got for fluid. I don't see any more tags or id on the engine anywhere. The mag has a number on it, but i do see the gearbox looks like it says: 30 dash can't tell what the rest of it says and then up top right there. It says joe's gear 30 t did joe make a lot of gear boxes. That's probably a 30 t right there too, then there's a serial number, let's get you in close.
I don't know if that helps us at all, neither all right gas tank. You get the oil out of it and gas tank next, two things. You should probably look at we'll start the oil drainer first and we'll delve into we haven't even looked in that yet have we slacker? This is one of the first things i do, hmm, not terrible, but you definitely can't tell the definitely a lot of sludge in here, though huh are you craning your neck, trying to see all right? What are we gon na? Do oil get the oil out of it see we get generally, they sit a really long time. All the craps goes to the bottom, that's pretty thick! I wouldn't.
I wouldn't call that 30 weight. It's like a almost like a gear oil. Well, we'll let that do its thing for about 45 minutes. Try poking it with a stick seems like it's just it's more coming out of here.
Sometimes it could be just a big pile of crud. That's in the way yeah. I think that's. What's going on a lot of sludge in the bottom of the motor there, it goes, i think, we're gon na end up running this one and we'll let it run have to drain it again there.
It goes now it's flowing. What do you think? Take some carb cleaner or that was cleaned out before all the crap, that's in the bottom, settling out of it. I'm gon na take some brake clean, we'll kind of like flush it around and let it rinse out with the crud that's sitting on the bottom. I wonder if should put the drain plug in and let it sit in there for a second, or is it just coming out clean unless there's some rust, rusty, crap coming off, let's go! Is that the plug for it? No, that's not it like.
I said we're. Probably going to run it anyway, but let's go, please give it a little. What, for once, it runs and splashes around it'll break up all that crap! That's on there he's just sitting there. We can kind of, let's see what we get, don't drop it on.
Well, that's a weird color huh expect to see that. Do you think that's a rusty, you think it's like a paint or a primer. That's on the inside of the engine that i'm melting off you're gon na leave it like that, like i said, we'll, we'll do another flush later. That runs a little bit.
That is an odd color. It bled with that gas tank off, but i want to get this bowl off here first, i do think that is not factory, though, does it look like one of those little testers jars thread yeah, that's a jar about to say we can't use it again, though, Can we as available, does not sure it's all varnished we got to get the straps off the tank. I guess we can leave it, maybe right on there for now we'll get it off. I'm going to take it apart. I don't think we got enough swing room. You know we don't have enough swing room disassemble it where it is. Let's get these straps out of the way up here, hmm one that one the threads are pinned over on it. Let me see if we can get a pair of needle nose.
Vice grips to hold that screw from turning up top. I don't know if i can get this whole tank in the ultrasonic cleaner. It might probably be our best avenue, so we get a spin. Actually, this is probably the one i'm concerned about more is getting the valve to work.
This might be able to pop out of our way that looks like it's a filter too. I think that unbolts, i don't want to break it. If it's not, you know it was on the cusp there. I think that's a filter, you clogged one of that and i must break it all the way down huh.
I don't think it's gon na make it with the valve. Let's see if i can just spin the whole thing out yeah, it's definitely been a dare too, since fuel's gone through that these come off. I don't know if the chemicals are going to get them when we go to soak it. Let's set because anything loose.
No nothing's coming out of it. I do think we need to put some of that that carb clean in there, though so i'm gon na, go, try to get the rest of this apart, especially the valve. I think it's in the closed position. Isn't it yeah? Nothing blows through it.
You could probably take that apart if we have to looks like a cotter pin with a pre-loaded spring. Yes, you can get the valve apart because it needs to be fixed right, probably grab it with these and tap on it. With a hammer see that pin will come out got a watch. We don't launch it afterwards, though that was underwhelming, so you can wiggle that whole thing right out of there.
I guess yeah, it's got taper to it. I don't know if we need to take any of this apart, whether it's going to help us or not. I don't think that cork gasket's going to want to come out of there very well, neither let's uh, okay, i'm going to throw it in with the car. We'll let that go for a little while longer and see how that does try a couple of things.
It's not rust. It's varnish for the most part, so i'm trying different q-tips just kind of rubbing it on it and looking at the end of the tip and see, maybe one works better than the others like after i clean my dog's ears. So this one's denatured, alcohol that one's black or thinner that one's mural spirits they're all about the same huh hello. What do i got the most of? What's the cheapest? Let's go with a denatured, alcohol or mineral spurs that one that one that one i put a cork in the bottom side, keep it all in the other thing.
Is they don't want to? We could probably strap it to the car wheel, put some bolts in it and let it chug its way around. Let's go see how this works, we'll, let it sit up with this for a little while we got this stuff to work on anyway. Let's see if that does anything that fuel line, i'm gon na run some brake clean through it. Let it clean the little bowl at the same time. Ah that burns a cut. Oh it's hot! I think that spark plug wire has seen better days and that terminal is just about ready to break off, so you can go find something else to replace it with over. On my wire stash, i have this and this that probably looks closer huh. This actually looks like it might be like a clear jacket with crazy the one let's go.
This looks more. The part right with the cloth on it go cut some of that off sorry about that noise. In the background, that's the furnace. It's that time of the year, let's go see if that'll thread on diameter's a little thinner than the other.
The jacket is probably asbestos and we need about that long and a little more so we'll cut it like that strip it back and see. If we can go get a butt connector on the end of that, so so factory we just kind of really quickly clean those points off. Let's go take a better look at the mag and at the minimum we have to lube the cam that the points are on yeah that needs some lube on there. Let's go see yeah, you see it wind up and then fire and it pops it past.
The gap looks like there's some crud, that's on there too yeah. Some rust is built up on there using scotch brite scotch brite our friend, for that, like paper, cut the center of my thumb. This is the thing that has the alcohol on it. So, let's definitely let me know it's still, there yeah it's kind of kind of cruddy huh neat how it does that that gap looks really large for the points now i'm gon na go.
Take my time go clean that up a little bit should probably leave it alone. If we see that it has a problem later on, actually there's a it's written right, there point set to zero. If you guys can see that zero one one three one eight, i can't tell i'm gon na go, look closer on that and we'll set that gap up. That gap looks pretty big.
That looks like it's it's 25 or so it's ridiculously large! That's what i was questioning it. Let me go clean them up, maybe just take them right off, we'll clean them up and uh figure out what that number says and we'll set them to that. So i measured, though, where it was and it is 28 thou and we have to knock it down so that that 15th out, so what i believe what it says you should be able to crack that loose and then there's a little slot in the back. You should be able to open and close them.
Let's crack this one loose too. Let's see praying right about there. Actually, that's pretty good yeah, they that's a little loose. Now they have carpenter's eye and mechanics.
I wanted to measure what it was before we took it apart just in case i have an issue and it was running how it was set. You know that's good right there, a tight 15., i don't say it so i'm going to go put a little bit of lube on the pad to go around and that'll. Keep that from burning that thing up way too much once the you know, the pad will pick it up and then spread it all the way around the cam or use the touch made a mess. Out of that, it could have went a little easier. Anyone shuts it off, there's a little jumper wire coming from the points to this stud. This stud is isolated from the case. There's plastic around it, but then you just take this post and you ground it out and it grounds the points off and that's what kills the engine check out? Those bathroom stall screws, those little safety screws. You can tighten them down, but it won't allow you to turn them off kicks the screwdriver out.
Does that mean they don't want you to mess with it? I didn't think they're around that long. I'm gon na find one of these screws, so i need a screw for that. I have one, but it's too long and it's the right. You know non-phillips regular.
I just want to show on your wire cutters a lot of wire cutters. Have them the little uh threaded cutters? You run it into the length that you want make sure you run it from the right direction, though, that you want the side with the threads the side with the head on it, because sometimes it could be a little hard to get out and just bring it Through there and give it a cut and then it'll fall off, this end will back out, and if i was, if i eyeballed it correctly, it should be the right length for our missing screw. Oh it's gon na be close could have been a quarter inch shorter. That's it, i think, we're good on that plug wire's already made.
I think we should probably go grab our kerbertheater and go take that part and uh bring that back over rather and get that reassembled so that float back in there make sure that stays floating. Oh, that's warm! You thought it was going in. Didn't you, i'm gon na go rinse that off with some water, i'm feeling for anything shakiness on the inside, there's any fluid in it. It might, it might be leaking.
So i want to go look up. What aam is for an engine, and i got a picture of one and it's a musky musty - has this musky? It's meant to be well, it's actually the next day, because i was a bum and took the rest of the day off last night. Actually, i wanted to let that gas tank soak a little bit longer. So, let's get this thing put all back together and hopefully make some brumbrom noises with it see how good my memory is too for being 24 hours later.
The main this one got the filter that was the fuel inlet. I blew that screen out. You can actually kind of see through it now and what would you say that was five ace fridays float does not seem like anything shaking in there and we're gon na need the pin and that went. Does it go like that or the other way you remember, i'm gon na say it goes like that seems about right and it had that little metal bale that held it down and anything else inside that floatpole. I don't think so. The lid can go. I think everything else was external. It said that packing in it it's still loose, but the more you crank down i take apart.
There's a taper on it, see the taper, the more you crank, the two of them together, there's packing that will tighten down so that you don't get a leak around that part of it. So that tightens the packing - and this is still the adjustment you crack down on that hard enough - you'll make it so this would be very hard to turn. So you just you, get a good feel for what the that should have an o-ring on it. It should not an o-ring a gasket, so that's the main jet make sure that's out far enough where it doesn't interfere, i think half or nine half it is.
We have the idle jet that needs to go on with its washer. I think did that come out of there. You remember, i think it did get up and that goes there nope. It does not go there.
Nope i see where it goes, and we said we're going to run that one in and what was it? One and a half or two half one one and a half two we'll set them both the two. I think it was close. I think one was like one and three quarters in the main half one one and a half two that should be close enough to get to run. Let's run that packing down a little a little more good.
I think that's it for the car we got to do the shut off valve and the float that just has a taper to it and opens up a passage, no gaskets on that that gets, i believe, two washers one washer the other washer and then the cotter Key that holds it all together, but you have to take my word for it. I'm going to go, assemble the rest of that. Let's get that carburetor on there and see if we can fire that sucker up after we put oil in it, remember to put oil on it. Well, we must go see if that stuff did anything for the gas tank, i kind of doubt it.
I think i tried once before and yeah pretty much coming out like uh curdled cheese, i'm not quite sure. What's the deal with the uh, the white interacting there, i'm gon na go rinse that out yeah. It's like it kind of slimed itself up with the bottom. Over there, i'm going to rinse that out actually with hot water and then dry it out, probably with a hair dryer tried.
So whatever that white stuff is on the bottom, there actually did come out of the tank. I looked inside. It had a bunch up higher on the sides, so it's got hot water in it and screws i've been doing a bunch of that. Let's go green, that out we'll dump it in again and see what we can get coming out of it.
That did a better job. I should just done that to begin with huh two more one more, it's always the last one there it goes. Let's go see what it looks like that looks pretty good. I could live with that huh and we get all the water out of there get that dried up.
All the white was sitting on the sides up in there i'll take care of the moisture. Here's that oil that we took out it looks like it was paint that separated out so that probably had primer on the inside of the block and when i used the carb cleaner or brake clean it just washed it off the wall. So i don't think that was anything funky that was inside that engine and a little straight 30. girl gurgle. I think we're to the point we could put gas in it. I don't have on. There is a coil wire yet, but let's go throw some fuel in it. Let's see if it stays in that should be good.
I would think that would have already started to fill up. Maybe these oof. Let me go drain that once i got pretty cloudy huh, i hit it with air. After i hit with the heat gun, it had a bunch of dust that came out of it, but apparently it's a little bit more in it.
We get rid of that see. We get fresh stuff to go through. Let's see if round two is any better yeah. I should probably purge that whole tank out.
It has a filter that it still has to go up through there and through what you want to do run it all right. Let's hit the carburetor leaks at all right tight, i think so, let's get a coil wire on it back her up fire up hopefully. Well, i do believe the moment is upon us. Let's give a third throttle again the air fuel mix.
We still have to go play with so i'm going to. If and when it fires up, i'm going to start tweaking them, i'm going to rev it up full throttle, i'm going to adjust the main i'm going to try to go down to, and i don't even adjust the idle one. Well that started pretty easy good. Hopefully it fires back up.
I have a feeling, it might fight me a little bit. That was just the idle one. I was trying to set yeah. Let's give her some choke.
First, pull, though, see what it does. So i went to the point we wouldn't run and then back it off in about a half turn. Let's go a little bit more. I still have the air cleaner off too.
Actually it's on an air cleaner and say yeah any backfire. That's the bench rattling, not the motor, so how low you can get an idle nice that works awesome. That is a smooth running engine too i'm shaking bounce around a little bit. That's just really calm! I didn't check gear oil on the uh gearbox, but it's not in use yet that would be taken care of, and i don't know what it uses for fluid nice little engine huh that's been about 30 years since this round, at least judging by how cruddy those Points were what a cool setup it starts.
First pull nice compared to some of the ones i fought with this one really uh played well and definitely is a marine engine. As i looked it up and i think that's what m stands for and it's a muskie. I think the gas is dripping from the carb. Are you leaking right? There is that gas, or is that oil? It's gas dripping? Well, that's why it has a shut off.
That's the thing about so plus it's not sitting right. It's supposed to be sitting on an angle like that, because when it's in a boat it has to line up to the propeller which is down there so that to go under the boat, the engine's on an angle and it props down here. So that's why even the float ball sat on an angle too, and that carburetor should be should be sitting out like that. Awesome awesome even got some some permanent hold down clamps now for future engines, nice little setup, alright guys. Thank you. So much for hanging out with me just having some fun in the garage and spending the afternoon or night or morning, whatever time it is for you just wrenching on some old long, forgotten stuff that we get to bring back to life and a little bit of Fun with i'm gon na go bag and tag. This one probably run the fuel out of it. I'm gon na put up in my stash and if we have a future project that this thing can go in, that will be its uh future.
My guess is probably like a 13 foot boat or something like i bet. You've been dripping gas for a long time, because you look right where it's dripping. It's all, that's where all the paints wore off right there. It looks like the same here too.
Maybe the bowl was dripping at some point and did a bunch down in this area, nothing like having a gas leak in a boat. I'm sure that combination works very well and again. The other thing that we have is the any backfire. So it's ever popped back out the carb.
It's like a flame arrester. I think it. I think they make like a z in the center of these. Each one makes a z they're not straight across this way.
You can't see through it, but you could blow right through it and now we're going on there tweak the year if you'll mix one more time, if that makes it a little bit of drag difference, hi guys, i'm rambling. Give us some throttle, i think throttle just a hair choke is probably its norm. You stay running, that's about 150 rpms, go till it shuts off! Bye.
dont know if you still have it but might be a cool little engine for that king midget car you have . forward reverse . but i cant remember how the set up for a motor is in that car .

When I was a young man working for my wifeโs father he had a small engine repair shop I learned so much from him probably forgot more than I remember now but I sure wish I wouldโve kept ahold of some of those old engines that ended up in the shop and eventually went to scrap engines now that are sought after but just wasnโt worth anything back then wished I wouldโve had the foresight to just tuck them away! I remember many hit and miss engines that would have driven a large belt that ran many other machines that ended up in the scrapyard! Watching this makes me almost kick myself in the teeth lol
the fuel tank and carb are at the same angle. it was set up to run at that angel. it looks at about the right angel for a sail boat prop drive (backup engine) also fits with for / rev on output. and yes that is a spark arrest not af on carb that also tells me it was used on water ( no dirt) rare find when not a ball of rust. motor oil on the felts in the mag.
Good job, I do enjoy your videos. Neat engine. Wisconsin engines are rare in the UK -although – in the 1960โs my uncle had a Massey Harris machine for making hay bales & it was powered by a V4 air cooled Wisconsin engine, that had one speed – flat out. To start it, it had a starting handle that went onto the engineโs crankshaft but when it fired up the handle spun round on the crankshaft & everyone ran for cover until the handle worked itโs way off the shaft & flew – anywhere. I was young at the time but it was an impressive engine & exciting to start.
Maybe an inboard boat motor? Motor mounted at an angle, hence a tilted float bowl. Attached to a propeller through a stuffing box. I'm guessing 3-1/2 HP.
I think the engine was designed to be tilted slightly hence the angled carb. similar was found in boat engines to accomodate the angle of the prop shaft. It would also explain the FWD & REV gearbox
Have you ever tried putting pea Stone in the bottom of those gas tank like a quarter full and a little bit of kerosene and shake the hell out of ? It works pretty good then put it in your Parts cleaner I do it on motorcycle tanks I don't have a fancy parts cleaner like you have. I wish I did
I have seen them use a sealant like red lead on some of those old castings because there not so good the old sand castings had a tendency to leak. I ran across some old motorcycle engines and the crankcase were coated with red lead inside. So that's what probably came out of that drain hole. But my wheels are turning about what I could use it motor for, it has possibilities for a lot of things
As soon as I saw that trans and output coupling, I said "boat engine". I've actually seen a set of plans for a riverine houseboat of about 15 ft that showed a rig just like that in the engine bay. Awesome find, I'd say buy a pile of boards, break out the planes, and build a 15 ft pirate ship to pillage shipping in the local lakes, lol

had cut that spark plug cap wire then put the cap back on it and about the light i think medium is good maybe too much little when you have have you multimetre on its lighting the screen alot of time we arent able to see anything you read ๐ love you chanel btw !
