A subscriber contacted me on this old race bike that his family rescued from a barn and wanted to know if I would be interested in it, lets see what we have and if it can be saved?

Hey guys how's it going i'm hanging out with bill bill, contacted me on a motorcycle that he had grabbed from his brother. Was it yeah? I got it from my brother came out of her barn in vermont about six years ago. He didn't do anything with it, and neither did i, and so i called musty and said see if he can do something and you guys had taken it apart. You were starting.

The issue was the it's locked up, it doesn't turn up. Yeah, okay, my brother pulled the you know the exhaust off and the side panels and started to mess with it, but then lost interest. Yeah. It's not looking very good, but we're gon na go bring this back to the house, to the house to the shop and uh.

Maybe we'll do a little dissection on it see we can go, find see if it's savable, if not we'll, look into what it failed for and possibly what happened thanks bill thanks. I know we got to up on the lift. Let's take a better look at what we got and we'll go look at the box of parts that we got too. So it is a 74.

What is that say? Three, that's probably just serial number, it's a 74 250 penton ktm. I guess penton was a racer who wanted a better bike and he designed one and commissioned. I think it was ktm, i think, in the 60s late 60s to build bikes for him and then, as time went on, ktm started, steering it more and more towards their name, and so this is 74. I think in 78 the name pension was all done, but they were starting to put pen and ktm both on it got the adjustment for the rear shocks.

This is a basket case and bought as a basket case. I've seen some things that do not look very good. The magneto is off and you see all the white powder, let's form it in there. That is not a good sign and again somebody's already taken it all apart and kind of had their way with it.

So i don't know if it's going to be we're going to get into it, he pulled the plug out, put some, i think, marble down the cylinder hole and it's going on off switch here. I don't think that's factory, oh that's just for spark or what that is. Rims look pretty decent handlebars, i think, are a little on the bench side. The right side seems like it's bent towards us.

I know the seat's torn up tires, look decent for what they are probably hard as a rock, but now it's got some cracking in it all right. Let's go look in the box of goodies and see. What's inside there, let's see we got your fender looks like somebody painted it. I'm sure that i think it's fiberglass, i'm sure it's fiberglass or plastic.

I don't know what that is intake. I guess that's the intake box going into the frame side covers one too many wheelies or an endo. Our front fender looks like somebody tried patching it to you at one point and then did it again. There is the cover for there.

That does not look good. It's got stalactites grown in it, a bunch of paperwork manuals. This cycle magazine we'll build a sale repair manual. Imagine that oh yeah there's the magneto that went on there and definitely looks like possibly was in a flood to about.
Does it show right right about there? I think we know why it's locked up carb, there's the global off the carb with a bunch of corrosion corrosion inside there it looked terrible, didn't look great, neither and just a bunch of smalls. We got a picture. This is the original title, yeah or transfer statement of origin. That's what it is.

I guess the original title for it and then just bags, i'm also just bringing you over there. You go looking hopper for yourself, alright for the air, cleaner, fender and air box engine lower right side, counter, shaft and clutch got a counter shaft in it. I don't know what that is brake lever hardware. It's got a gas tank i'll bring that over the tank feels like it's fiberglass yeah, i'm gon na go with fiberglass, so it doesn't have any corrosion issues.

I don't know what all the spider ring is going on there, whether it just took a hit or yeah right leaned it on that's like it's. Only on the one side got ta, be careful with these two because modern fuels. I know like i'm on boats. They have a fiberglass gas tank, you try putting fuel with alcohol in it, ethanol, the ethanol starts, breaking down, the the glue holds the resin together or the resin, i should say, and then the seat, which is kind of tore up.

You can see both names on it. There too seats on the baked side, but again it's 74 was it uh, so that makes it 48 years old. All right, let's go get a little light, we'll start poking down the holes and see what she's she looks like all right. We're going in i'm going to look through the ah yeah ain't.

Looking good, is it yeah? I don't think it's supposed to look like it has s'mores for lunch yeah. I think we have a good idea why it's locked up, let's go take a look at the exhaust port and judging by the white color on the and it's not can we see a side of a piston or anything yeah. I think that's! That's the side of the piston right there, so the other side showing us either going through a port and it's looking down at the bottom of the crankcase. I know somebody had this engine out or not.

I see a bolt out there, nothing on that, but i saw another one out of there too, so this may have been taken apart and then the guys got it and with the hopes of resurrecting it and somebody already kind of gave up. My guess is, i don't know judgment by the way that magneto is, but it was going straight across, i would say, probably in a flood or it was driven, it got swamped and they just never cleaned it out. My guess is that it probably got swamped. It got driven in, and water got sucked in on the intake and the bottom.

On the two stroke the piston goes up. The the charge of air fuel is on the bottom of the crankcase and then when the piston goes back down, it transfers it back to the top. So that would explain why the bottom of it filled up and unfortunately they probably just never drained it, and it failed because of that and it got put away and just never dealt with again uh. Let's get start taking some stuff apart and i'm trying to get an idea.
I, like the gas tank thing. This goes over the center of the tank. That's like the old, indian or harley. Look you'll probably take the top of the cylinder head off too and get a little better peak down inside there i get in the bottom ends where the issue is going to be, and i don't know if this has roller bearings in the bottom.

My guess it would be being a two-stroke and i have a feeling all that would be junk. Judging by how much corrosion is on there, but let's not condemn it. Yet, let's keep digging, probably the easiest, we'll get this little intake boot off and then we'll do the cylinder head next yeah. It doesn't look any better, getting closer, see down! Oh boy, look the that thing in the middle is a connecting rod.

That's not supposed to be white. I think this thing was gon na flood in salt water. She is pretty iffy all right. Let's get the top of cylinder head off and the problem is, i have a feeling the piston is going to be so seized to the jug.

It's gon na be hard to get apart, but we'll deal with that when we get there right, let's go yeah. They like cracking loose, it's got a mix of allen and just regular nuts on it, like every other. One is different. Let's see if they get cracked loose, not bad.

I haven't found any that are indicated that it's all rotted together i'll bring it back when the hardware is out we'll just pop the head off, i might have spoke too soon got a lot of drag all the way out. It's bleeding on us. It looks like oil that he put in the top end. I don't know if we're gon na have to go.

Give her a couple of taps or it'll it'll come right off. I don't wan na break any fins, so i might just lift come on there. You go, let me go pop, you in the stand, use two hands, i'm missing. What am i there and the reveal says, i'm stuck pretty much at top.

That doesn't look terrible. I don't think that's where any of the water damage was, though, although even having saying that it looks pretty rough for something that would have been just stored away, it's locked up pretty good for rust, yeah. You can still see some metal down below, but let's just get a rag, it's got boogers in it, it's been sitting with crap in it for a long time, then we get a rag, wipe that out and we'll see if we can get. We got ta do to get this off so to get the bottom end off.

It actually well in this case not really going to matter, but the piston was stuck at like bottom dead center and the crank still moved. It allows you the capacity to have the cylinder lift up on the bottom and you can kind of get to the underneath of it this one. On the other hand, i don't think we're gon na get any movement out of it. We we're probably gon na, have to make a press off the center of the piston off these studs.
I think these studs might go all the way through though we use these holes, that's it if you could save that gasket. Just in case, i don't want to be trying to mount a puller on top of it. Shaved looks like it might have a sleeve in it, which is nice. That's sleeve, right there, it's top of sleeve right there.

All right, we're gon na need some kind of puller of something this thing's been sitting for years with oil in it. So adding a lot to it now is whatever it's got is already been soaked down the side of it. We could probably shoot some in the ports - maybe i don't know, let's try to get something set up. I have a feeling we might have to get the motor right out of the bike, though, to do it because we don't have much room above it, but let me see what you can come up with the land of pullers, so we really should probably try to Get across those four locations, the four points, so we need something that most of them are going to be three, that's gon na be too small.

Anyway, i do have a regular like a puller set. That's in the plastic tray that the basic one we have to. We could probably do is make a plate to attach to. Let me see what i got.

There's got to be something in here right: how about can we get it with this one? I might do it. Let's go quickly. Look at that yeah. I think that's gon na be closer catch that i don't know so yeah, because if we have to try to catch this one, we won't be able to get these.

If i slide that down, i might just be able to catch this one this one and this one problem is it's pushing off center that kind of sucks the other option if we just try to grab the two across from each other, even with that we're running Some interference with them, i don't know, let's just go, throw some bolts in it the thing on it and give her a couple of twists see what happens. I think we'll try that these original head bolts that were in it looks like i'll get a good about. Three quarters of an inch - and this is what we're going to try driving it with it - has a hollowed center. The top of the piston has a bit of a crown to it, so i kind of want to touch on an outer edge, but you can't use something completely flat because it'll just touch you know on the very center if it was completely flat due to the Dome, that's there so we'll go with that.

Give her a couple of cranks see if it get any kind of movement out of it. You remember me using that yeah that's not happening. The problem is, i can't get down far enough to the center of it. This lip hits the wall before it gets over the center of the hole, so instead there's a washer like that down inside, but that allowed me to not use that hold up got ta have the right tool for the right hole.

You know what i mean. We should throw some earl on the little pivot spot first down below, give that something to spin on and cooper up the threads to where we're at. If it really starts getting torqued down, the oil drastically helps to get it. Let's see if we flip that it'll ratchet wrench, what do you think our possibilities are something that anticipation got you too come on, make a poppin sound of some sort, i'm looking real, quick to make sure there's no other bolts around the bottom of it.
I don't think so. I think it's just these four going through and starting to get up there with pressure, something just went tink it's to that point where it could possibly start tearing stuff up. Let's just kind of eyeball things real quick, i didn't even know if shooting oil down there, it's not like it could wick up and into it. You can always take the engine flip it over, though right put it on the in the cylinder and just flip.

The thing upside down would that even do anything for us. If i throw some heat on it thing is with this, it doesn't have any damage fins whatsoever, so it's probably the best part that would shoot at right. You might as well try to you can see. I can literally see the walls stuck in rust to them.

Yeah spray, some lube up in there just hitting it with this, just because of what i had no product placement, especially if it doesn't work right all right, i hit those already. I wonder if we can. There's not much area on the bottom. I think i like tap on the you know.

We give you some a little up pressure here and there what's that, if we give a little up pressure, i wonder if she'll give a you know a little pop. I don't want to. I don't want to hit down on the top of the the stud. I'm just ready.

You know pushing right through the top of the piston, so you know ripping the studs out the next thing i'm worried about uh. I don't know. Let's go. Maybe we'll try to cut like a piece of wood that kind of conforms to this a little bit, so it's hitting on a larger area.

Let's go take a picture of the other side, real, quick and this side that can really be able to get in there. Though, unless you take this cover off right, probably wouldn't hurt. We get a better idea. What some other stuff is going on, not like, we need the shifter or the kickstart yeah.

Let's go pop that cover off. I think fluids will come out when we do that too. It should be a wet clutch and we can see what that stuff looks like, and with this cover removed, you could probably get a little bit better access or even come up with another plan. You think anything, water or nothing, we're full and we'll take the transmission state.

Okay, this is the vent tube for the trans. It all would have had to go down there all right or could be that's all. That's in there yeah yeah, almost that's more like it. She looks pretty good oil's, not all just a little place to pry off right there pushing cover, kill the gasket all right, it's half stuck on one half on the other, tipping it off the cover.
That part looks pretty good. You could also turn the crank over there. This is the end of the crankshaft right here and maybe put a big socket on this with a breaker bar see if we just kind of rock the bottom a little bit and see if we can get any of that play, i was talking about. My guess is, that's all locked up inside there pretty bad, but let's give that a shot.

It just seems you know a better source instead of just keep cranking on that. It'll probably work too putting this like on an impact gun and have it just kind of fuzz and that's going to come off this way, but give it a little. That's just the nut moving, oh yeah, so the choice is trying to get the piston to move on the cylinder with a crank that turned to allow it to lift up neither one of those want to play. Well, i really didn't think that bottom end was going to move uh so back to where we were get a little bit better access, which i come up with something we can kind of.

You know it has a a v. What are you looking at a v on an angle, just kind of come up right in there they'll go back with like a beefy hammer and just give her a bunch of taps around the side of it. So you can get it to pop free, at least even just if you can get to to break the seal of it and then maybe get some fluids around it. Yeah it's gon na be, and i can't get much of a hit on it.

Let's do some whittling so a little bit more of that pretty tight. There is a lot on that right now we could try, put some heat on it, be my next best guess you have a better idea. Another thing we probably do too is take the puller and flip it around, so i'm catching this hole and i'm pushing on the other side of the piston. What's the thoughts see what heat does it's lighting the fluid fumes that i put in there? One thing that sucks is it's something designed not to get hot: it's got so many cooling fins on it that whatever heat you're trying to put this center gets dissipated very quickly.

Exactly what it's supposed to do, though, i'm gon na go around. I'm gon na try hitting on both sides in front and back and bring you back. We get any kind of excitement. So so, let's try and save that i try to throw in some heat on the liner right there, the cylinder, that's pretty cooking.

I think i'm gon na take the puller off and i'll flip it around the other way. While it's off, it's got a lot of heat in it too we'll try spraying some of the uh rust buster of sorts on it and see if that'll kind of soak in around the piston and draw it out. But in case it wasn't obvious what i was trying to do, trying to keep the cylinder up, so it expands away from the piston and while the presser pressure is pushing on the piston, it expand and kind of pop and didn't happen. Yet so i went to go and back off the puller and it didn't have much tension on it.
Let's go give her see what we get something just felt like it moved where i went through the top of the piston one of the two. I'm not gon na jinx this, but i think it's moving a little come on. I can't touch that it's 400 degrees. Alright, i got ta get moving out to the other side, so i can get a good swing at it.

So i don't know if we're losing temperature or just going on an area - that's much more cruddy. Let's soak some of that down in there. Let that soak for a little bit then we'll heat it up. Again, it's going it's about a quarter.

It's up about a quarter off the base. Getting there i'm running out of goo. Maybe we should even take that puller too. Maybe flip it around.

Oh, should we leave it alone? Hey be nice. I was pushing dead center, but is what it is right. I let that we're gon na, let that cool down for about five minutes and let that soak in and then we'll reheat it again see if it's continuing to do the same, if not we'll flip it around find it's like still tight, then we'll try that before Heat it up, this goes to see what it does. Yes, it's full locked up time to cook it again, another area, i'm thinking too what about on these? They could be bound up too right in the board.

I think what doesn't help too, underneath the piston is all that white crap. That's we're trying to go push through, there's a gap there, but i don't think it's enough for us to do anything with. As far as now, maybe getting some fluids in there look where'd the light. Go: oh yeah, that's exactly it! Yeah! Let's go spray some down in there too.

That's about all she's got. I think we should probably maybe flip that puller to the other side and see if that helps us any it's just that's exactly what it's doing it's pushing through all that white crud, all that white crap, that is on the piston! Look at that piston! Oh, that's! Trying to slide out of a bore that part doesn't look terrible at the wrist. What is that right? There, a port - and i got support - oh boy, she's, a tad one. Let's go pick that washer out see if anything's happening damage.

Why i said piston yeah, you grab it we'll. Just let you go to there takes you the dryness all right in there i'll start it there move that far about a quarter of an inch. I don't feel any holes, no holes in the pool. That's a bird flying over so i'll do the same thing i'll flip it around we'll start pushing on this side of it a little bit i'll spray.

Some goober down in there see if it'll help, i think, just a half it's trying to push its way through. On the other side, ain't helping. It's give me a miracle that comes apart. Uh back to heat chat, my gasket's burning.

It's burning the paper of the gasket. There you go. I tried putting some heat on the front and then what i think is happening uh. It's not changed.

All that crud! That's on the bottom! There's credit on the piston and crud under the piston, as the piston is trying to draw down through it. The walls are even the material that as it's coming down is, is getting more and more. It's kind of crushing it all together. Building up under the lip is my, i guess: what's going on, i'm gon na try cranking a little bit more, we'll see if we get anything now that it's hot, if it doesn't, i think we might have to do is let's take this off, put something on The studs and try to draw the cylinder back down against you can get it to kind of work a little bit and then, while you're working it you're able to get some goo in between it moved so getting tired.
I take a break. Let's see what we got happening in the lane of crud, oh yeah, that's not the liner coming out. Is it no curious seat that crank moves inside there look yeah, she's gooey, all right. I set the gasket on fire, plus whatever fluid was in there.

Is that broken chunks or something i might see, terminal damage already hold on in a stand you see like? Is it like a nugget right there? Oh, it's ashy that was a hunk of metal, yeah, there's all kinds of crap in there there's a hunk of something yeah. We have some issues all right. Let me regroup heat her up again continue cranking. So so i'm looking at trying to figure out if the head's going to come off the piston enough to clear the frame.

I think these we can spin out put vice grips on and possibly get them out, because they're going to have to clear to get up and off too. If i can't, i don't want to get up there too high, because i think the engine has to get lifted up a little bit to get out. If we run it all the way up, we kind of screwed, so we're going to need what that's going to come up out of its cradle. That's probably already screwed right, i kind of like it in the frame, though it just holds everything in place.

Let's open one section of frame came away. How does that come out? You got ta, probably punch the bolt out uh, i'm gon na go measure. How much is left of that piston in there, where that'll leave us and make a decision? So i think we get off there if the studs come out. If they do not, we might be better off yeah, i'm going to get them buzzed out of there and hopefully they'll clear the frame coming out and we'll see and uh.

We can have a little bit more work and replace it. Who knows if the crank even moves might be able to rock it from side to side a little. I think the puller's going to run into the top. I did pull one stud out.

The problem is, you can't pull the stud all the way out of the frame, so if i get all four of them out and the piston's free, i can rotate it. I should go, get them out. So as we were the heat's gone away, i don't think we need it anymore, so i have to drop a spacer down in there giving birth do all right. I got ta do something with the puller up top she's.

Pretty that sounds good doing it like corduroy, took all that stuff off of there and i kind of screwed up yeah. I did so you're. Looking there see that chatter marks down the wall, that's where the washer was pushing up against and it was popping down each time. I didn't see that it had that taper down there, so it kicked the washer up against the wall.
Oh well, we're not going to stop us when it's rest away apart. I think we're going to have to go pull the motor, because we still have to go clear that whole distance of that skirt down to there, which is still another two inches two inches. It's going to put me up into the bracket, even if i cut that off it's and there's a slight chance that we might have to clean up the bottom. A little so most of the bolts are out.

I think we get the wiring harness, looks like it's connected chain, of course, and let's go right through the swing arm. It looks like it huh. No, that's the swing up. All right that ball comes out, which is already loose, looks like somebody's.

Getting ready was getting ready to pull the motor. I knew exactly what i'm doing and sprockets loose all right. Take that out punch that bolt out get the harness up out of it and see if we can get on the bench. One big bolt's still in it see if it's free in here.

Hopefully, you have enough room yeah right about there, huh anything less back's still not down either it's gon na be a wrestling match, beat that sucker he'd be gone now you know that's stuck in there right. Sadly, i think i'm gon na have to tap it back down, but let's see i think we have enough room to come forward. You would think that engine would have had to go together with the head-on right. You wouldn't uh.

If you had to. I guess, but you would think they would drop the engine in assembled, not without the top end off of it, but you never know that was my wishful thinking up against the tab. I got no more room to rock forward. I was hoping the back would actually drop down and and work it out.

I'm going to go spray, a bunch of fluid on the top of the piston and see if i can knock the jug down just a little bit with some wood at the moment. The bike and i having a disagreement, i'm trying to tell the cylinder to go down and saying. No, so i think what we're going to try doing is maybe we'll vacuum out that, because you know, there's such a good chance that that crank will move just fine. Once that's out of the way, i wonder if we can just get it to turn just a little bit if it does it'll drop the whole thing down also, so let me see what we get and uh i kind of want to get it out shake it Out see how much of a pile we got but well well, this ought to make a mess.

It's a whole new meaning to blowing chunks yeah. I get that a zero percent chance it's gon na turn. I figured they may cut this tab off. To give us a little bit of room - probably at least invasive right now, so it's out of there see what's what one good thing about being out? Is you can aid in power tools? We got it.
I got ta reach it one more time. I think we got it did the piston survive. Those rings aren't popping out anytime soon. I tell you that all right, yeah she's a peach where's the light yeah, it's pretty crispy.

We have to split the case to get to that which is split in the transmission. Everything else too uh yeah, look at that. The crankshaft is welded itself right to the block on the side there that was not gon na turn ever. I wonder if she could take a wrist, pin out and get the piston out of her way.

There should be a c-clip or something in there get that out. Yeah look at the rings, let's see what the jug looks like polish still on it, but yeah, that's that was just marks from the the threads i was thinking. It was like the washer popping down. I don't think so now other than the damage that you guys caused doing that i think we'll probably clean up with a hone, don't know yet most of the damage is generally up in this area, but the piston was all the way up.

Who knows this is much more important to try to decipher whether there's anything left saving of this, which is not looking very good. I can try working to get that piston off of there, so you want to see a glimmer of hope. It moves on the crank not so much on the rod which is going to be hard. It's not about to get that piston out that, on the other hand, it's gon na be an issue.

I propped it up in almost um, like a battery boat box, a boat battery box, that's it and to split the case. You take all these out. I guess, but i don't know sometimes like a clutch. Shaft has to come with it where the clutch comes apart or not.

First, i just don't know the answers to that. So i figure we're just going to continue on this side and keep taking bolts out, and hopefully it falls apart. We got to get this off. I already took the coil out of the way, i'm not sure what the deal is with this thing.

I don't know if it even has to come off, we'll try it. I got to get the key out of it because that may rub trying to go through the case. This, i guess, is clutch. This is gon na, have a rod that pushes through the other side, we should probably take that out of our way.

Right now see, if there's anything else, we can see and just take a whole bunch of screws out, whack it with a hammer and it's the clutch rod going through push rod. Those are going to be a pain in the ass because they are all filled with kaka pick all them out. So once you strip out those allen, heads socket heads there kind of screwed drill them out, but you know what i mean: got a gasket. Here's your seal one bearing on one side, let's see a little persuasion on that case.

Maybe you should want to open the force a little. Don't know that, but let's go get a brass rod, give her a whack back and forth trashed it a little void. Inside of it, what should do that for well? The problem is, i think, the crank has just welded itself right to the block on both sides, and i don't see that really being able to come apart dumped him for me to hit in that area. Hey.
I saw how much meat was over here, i'm like well, that's a good spot to go hit it and i didn't realize that was so thin right there plus. I think the corrosion is so much on the magnesium that it's kind of like soft, too. You know, because you figure all this powder is actually the coming out of the metal making excuses. I know you actually just see it kind of like crumbling away even where it broke yeah, guys, i'm usually not one, to give up uh pretty much.

When i saw all the corrosion down inside there, i knew it was pretty screwed. I don't know what the outcome of this will be: uh, i'm going to keep an eye out for a motor. It really just kind of needs. The whole thing, because i, if you when we go to take that apart, the crank can probably be saved when you put bearings and stuff in it.

But i think the corrosion on the case is going to be quite extensive. Just from the fact of how much of that white material is foaming out of everywhere that had to come off of something so and i'm running out of time. I can't do much more wrenching over here, but my thought is it got salt water in it is. Is my guess, saltwater got in whether it uh was in a flood and water level, just kind of came up on the bike, which one part seems kind of correct, because when we looked at that magneto it had that water line going across it yeah.

That's just too much of a a distinction of you know where something wasn't where something was not. I don't know. Maybe it was sabotage. Maybe somebody poured cement in it.

Just don't know yeah. It's just unfortunate that uh. What has happened to it, but again what fun would it be if you said, you'll clean the cardboard and fire it up, so we get to go see how this one operates. The only thing i think of maybe putting like a motor from something else on it because yeah, it's not going to have any value unless you get all the correct parts for it uh, but the output.

The sprocket is on this side, which is on the right side of the bike. A lot of engines are on the on the left, so i'm not sure what the options are. Try to go put something else in it right. The frame everything looks decent tires.

Look all look good, so we'll see not promising that this bike you're ever going to go, see it again, but i tried and uh you know nothing ventured nothing gained got a bunch of cool pieces, might turn up as for something else and turn into something else Or you know we'll have some fun with it and do something, and you never know what you know opens up over time. Somebody watch the video say: hey. I got one of those on my basement that uh my brother johnny reacting the frame shot generally. The motors are no good, though so guys i wanted to end it, but at least we got to where we did and got a little bit of education.
What happened to this in the comments right down below what you think possibly happened to it? We don't know we don't have any uh backstory on it, so my thought is, it was probably gon na in a garage uh towards the ocean, we're fairly close to the ocean and the tide came up or a flood and it went under. I don't think anybody was riding it and did it because it doesn't it just doesn't have that look to it. You know all right guys, i'm mumbling until the next one, thanks for hanging out with me we'll do some wrenching on something else later.
