Hi my friend "Mustie" Is it really your name….? I am a old retired ex mechanic engineer but as hobby I liked playing around with air cooled engines VW and others petrol or diesel engines.
I am so surprised to watch and ear you battling with engines and I don't know if it is YouTube who ask to play for the video purpose extra long trial of engine starting — because normally the starter should burn out cable and pliers melt down…? noooo all keep's fine …? OK now I see you have a homemade engine and starter support ……! Good, now I will tell you what I made, was a support holding a old HD drill modified with a socket taking the crankshaft bolt. I used that system to run in crank bearing – run to polish the sleeves and run in conrod bearings
But also run to pre- diagnose or pre – starting adjustment I can tell you that system with a HD drill or an auxiliary motor electrical or combustion engine with a extra pulley mounted on crankshaft….This bench will please you — you can also make a support to use on engine in place in the vehicle……..For the Deutz air cooled engine I used a donkey engine like in the old Caterpillar ———— Hope I have given you the good tips !!! Warm regards.

Wow! What a great find! Be sure to adjust the valves. After a while out of the car, they are sure to be out of tolerance.

It would work if you put the other plug wire on the distributor

one of the neat things about VW aircooled engines is you can start them on the tailgate of your truck ! Not recommended for a Mopar V8 however

What i like to do is that situations is, on the end of my fuel squirter, i put a windshield wiper squirter nosal on the end of it so it send a mist of fuel and not just a stream.

Helps A LOT in situations like this.

On a fresher engine or a better tuned one they both work fine.

Have you ever considered making a "How to" course for repairing Bugs?
