I stopped by a friends shop that builds high end racing pedal bikes and had this small engine laying around from an old project that he offered to me, so lets see if we can get it to run for a future project. the coil and engine spin direction messed with me for a bit.

Did you ever find a cover and end up using this engine?

The fact it has spark in only 1 direction has nothing to do with diodes, it's got more to do with how the flywheel us magnetically polarised with the north & south poles on the flywheel & it may have something to do with the direction the coil is wound, it's a bit like connecting an ignition coil up in a car back to front.

I can remember Taryl Dactal on his channel Taryl fixes all discussing how he can either send a flywheel away to Briggs and Stratton to get the magnets polarised to suit a new ignition coil where they have changed its design somehow or he just flips the new replacement ignition coil upside down !

Not sure why but when you said the workers nearly killed themselves it reminded me of a place I worked where we would ride in the trailer of a lorry (semi) to get to the other building on the estate. It was very sketchy to say the least. How one of us didn't fall off and get killed is beyond me.

I believe you have a 50cc (or 49cc) Garelli motor of Italian design. The Del Orto carb makes it a pretty sure guess.
