It wont be driveable for long. My old 67 back in the 80's with god knows how many miles used to pop out of 4th and eventually would just grind when you tried to hold it.

Jumping out of gear is usually a worn syncronizer problem, ckeck them over too!

Worn synchro shifting plates. Also fit stronger detent springs to the selector rods.

Doing great I had the same problem but ended up putting a complete assembly in from another car..

These lessons will help me so much down the road when you sell me that ugly old 50s single cab.  LOL!!!

Lots of work there. Transmissions are still a mystery to me but I would like to take one apart and then rebuild it.

    Hi mustie,
I dabbled with vw's since high school, only type 1 bugs though but I seemed to remember having to adjust the shifter itself on the floor to also help eliminate that problem. A shifter adjustment if you will. I'm not too familiar with buses, but the 2 bolts that holds the shifter in the bug I snugged it up enough and would place the shifter in third gear and hold it towards the passenger front tire if you will then tighten those 2 bolts. It helped align the shift gate and seemed to help each gear hold positively in the gear your in, providing all parts are in good shape like syncros and such. Just my thoughts. Hope all goes well in solving your problem.

I thought VWdarrin said to a something and grind or file something so first gear doesn't slip out of gear.I don't rember exactly what the parts were.

Mustie1, $50 is not much to pay for some education, so, the water logged transmission was a steal. To loosen rusted components, I frequently pepper the assembly with profanities, it doesn't help the rust much, but, it sometimes helps me feel better.
