I definitely like the look of it I don't think it should have went lower I think you got it right once you get the rest of the stuff on it to fill that Gap up I think it'll look great.
I'd say the two chain idea is likely the best way to go. Be way easier to get around the motor/chain clearance issue with the two chain setup. Also, aesthetically, I think the it would look better.
