I made a deal to buy a 1966 ford mustang that the owner restored in the 80s, but has sat in the garage since 2006, we struck a deal on the car and loaded it up, when I went to verify the VIN under the hood the numbers were hand stamped, this was a red flag to m so I had the owner sign an agreement that if the hidden vin under the passengers fender did not match he would refund my money, well after pulling the passenger fender for the other hidden VIN it had no numbers, it did not look like any metal was replaced and did not look like they were ground off. not saying it was stolen but I do not want to take the risk. we returned the car the next day,

Title smitle. lol. I've never heard of a cop checking the vin unless they suspected you of being a car thief already.

In some states this wouldn't even have a title. It depends on the state.

Later year cars had a secret vin location on the frame. I have no idea if that practice went as far back as 66.

…and now Mustie1 knows why it sat unfinished for 14yrs. Owner must have figured it out when he went to register and insure it years ago. It's essentially a parts only car now. Shame for it being as clean as it is.

That is a sketchy buy right there! Possibly someone owned a 66 blue mustang and wrecked/scrapped it or just field parked it to rust away but still kept the title? So they bought a car to restore with no title and put their previous VIN on it so they could sell it figuring nobody would care or investigate it? Something to that sort would be the only logical thing I could think of, aside from replacing the whole front end, changing the interior, and painting it red then just stamping on the VIN to the new front end figuring they were keeping it forever? Definitely too sketchy to put any money into and register it under your name! If the tag came back to a red/red/ 66 then it would be a tiny bit closer to legit
