They can get a lot of slack and need to be replaced before they fly apart and destroy block

Using Mustles video, I took my B&S twin apart, the governor weights had blown apart just like this vid describes, so I'm off to buy the governor cog as he says. So very thorough howto, thank you. Not very impressed with B&S motors as a result, esp if this is a known problem. What I would like to know is how to get the darn thing to idle slowly and rev more at full throttle. Thats why I was fiddling with the governor and why it responded by falling to bits.??

Curious as to know if the JB weld held up? I'm in the same boat with my Briggs 18.5

The govenor shaft can't be drilled and pined, to the sump cover?

Just what I needed to see. Great explanation! I'm sure this is what happened to my engine as well. Thank you for taking the time to make this video!

I have a PYT9000 with a 24hp b&s vanguard. This video may be helpful in the future. Thank you.

Ive got a Allis Chalmers rider with the Professional series Briggs Twin, it runs fine but there is no throttle control, it runs one speed, Ive set the governor as you set forth, and Ive replaced the O Rings inside the Carb and it still runs at a fast only speed, no adjustment no matter what you do with the Throttle. Im going to assume the Governor has broken and begin the rebuild process.

    Old mustie!
I just got one of these mowers
Had a blown out pan gasket, common issue apparently.
Engine is open right now, looking for something extra to check out while it's apart!

Great video! I have a Snapper Z1404K ZTR that has had a 16hp Vanguard swapped on a few years back. Spring mowing season is here, so I changed the oil and filter (both B&S spec as I have done for the 10 yrs I have owned the mower) and after a half hour of mowing "BAM! CRUNCH!" , so I shut her down quick. Checked the oil, level fine, let her cool off, starts up fine, but no power under load. I believe I have experienced the governor failure that seems common to these engines. I think my uncle paid nearly $5k for the mower in the mid 90's, and my aunt had trouble with the original 14hp engine after he passed away and she had the new 16hp installed (around $2k after install (!)). It has been a great, trouble free mower (and was free to me), so I want to keep it going! Thanks again!

Mustie my old friend! any idea why this would keep happening to the same motor? Ive installed, adjusted and blown up 2 internal governors.

Why does it keep happening buddy?

This might just be what has happened to mine.
