That happened to me one time, many years ago. After that, I put a heavy mesh screen over the top of the chimney and that keeps them out! I have a wood burning fireplace insert similar to yours, but it's a side loader.

If you found a f!lying squirrel in your fireplace, you need to check for a moose on your mantle (I know a pair that used to travel together).
I had the same thing happen and i tied strips of bed sheets together and put them down the chimney from the roof. He was able to climb out.
