You made the right decision on deciding not to shoot your VW with clear coat. Clear coat is garbage, the worst thing to ever happen to automotive paint finishes since Henry Ford's "We can paint your Ford any color, as long as it's black". Think not? Just look around at the cars around you while you sit at a red light, and you can bet that you'll see a few fairly recent car finishes either disintegrating, or the cars have actual rust spots right through the paint. That was very rare to see on the old single stage (pre-early '80s to early '90s) paint jobs. Clear coat is trash for the benefit of the bedwetting envirowackos.

so Awesome !!!! whoever primed it truly saved the original finish. thankfully it found its way to you. otherwise im betting it would not have survived.

Boiled Linseed oil will do what you want.

The way a gun would be conserved is by boiling it in de-mineralized water to convert the red oxide to black oxide, brushing off the loose red oxide after boiling. Not sure how you'd do that for those VW panels though. Maybe if you can find a steam engine you can build a tent round it and blast it with super-heated steam.

Thatโ€™s amazing how the old lettering shines through. Too bad Rustolium doesnโ€™t make a clear coat. love your videos!

Looking pretty sharp! I know his is already done. But, you might experiment with household cleanser on terrycloth rags. Make a paste out of the cleanser a like rubbing compound. I've had amazing results bringing back out of dead paint. that way.
