I have mixed emotions, Mustie. While I am a big fan of the 616 type engines they do not lend themselves to the easy fixes like with the VW engines. Either way, Mustie…donยดt take it personally if things start to get expensive. I strongly suggest you borrow a copy of Harry Pellowยดs "Secrets of the Inner Circle". This guy was a true 616 legend. Iยดm sure youยดll get lots of laughs from the wry humor of his "stories" which you may read on the website Harryยดs family still maintains for the young and old who "keep the 356 faith".
Dude the sprockets and chains make really cool yard art would never get rid of them cut him out with a torch and just leave the shafts on them. They're great for all kinds of stuff.
Your comment about trying different solvents to loosen the pistons brought back a fond memory of my dad. He was always a mechanic, from his first off-the=farm job at a junk yard, through the Euroopean Campaign in WWII, To his own shop that he worked at and owned until in his 80's. All he knew was a 6 day week, 9 hr. days, with three holidays off without pay. Any way, when there was a stubborn nut or bolt, he would give it a shot of penetrant. I suppose it had a formula similar to Knock-r-loose or some such stuff, but he bought it by the quart or gallon so he could put it in a hydraulic oil can. His name for it was "Panther Piss"! Don't know if this was a moniker from the Army or what, but when he said "Give her a shot of Panther Piss!", I knew exactly what he was talking about. Dad lived to be 104 and for awhile, I wondered if there was a God big enough to call him home. All things have an end, but what I would give to spend some MORE TIME IN THE SHOP WITH MY DAD!
Scrapping yields cash and space, sometimes you gotta do it! I got an awesome vac out of a dumpster, again just choked with crap. Used it on site for years!
