When working on punky wood such as what's on the door frame use a liquid wood hardener. Brush it on in layers and let it soak in. It will not fix completely trashed wood but what you encountered it would regain much of its structural integrity. Needs to be kept dry so your project I believe would have been a good fit as it will be enclosed. Great work, great inspiration! Thank you

Those fasteners on the door are triple square. (I just learned about those in the last couple of years).
