Just had a similar problem put new springs I used small zip ties to hold the valve stem install the valve springs seats retainers everything then simply reached up between the coils with a razor blade and cut the zip. Tie I used a O'Reilly's valve spring compressor rental tool,โ๏ธ but I would get my razor knife red hot with the torch to make cutting the zip tie easy and used needle nose to remove the zip tie
Hello mustie may be you can help me, I lowered my engine to fix oil leaks, well I got them fix, while my engine down I adjust the valves, when I put it back in my bug and connect every thing, the engine rotates but will not start,, I went back and check timing, but when I checked the valves they were off, so I guess I did something wrong, so now I adjusted the valves once again and check the timing and it ok, but the engine rotates but will not start,,, thanx
I've just had the valve cover gaskets replaced on my 73 super beetle to fix an oil leak and now I hear knocking sounds when ecellerating on a hill that I didn't hear before. What do you think?
My wife thinks I watch too much Musty 1 videos. Hah! I must say that I enjoy your format that shows what you are doing, and not just a long drawn out head shot explaining what you did. Keep up the great format and interesting work.
when I brought my 68 back to life I had four all on the same side break, if you look at the spring real close on the break you will see rust usually caused from sitting too long I was able to buy a tool just for changing the springs and keepers on the car with the aide of compressed air,ย ย you do have to get creative and take my word replace all of them at one time because they will all break
That round clamp closest to the broken spring is bent so even if you replace the spring without replacing that clip/ clamp that holds the cam rod you might have a broken spring again. Watch the video? Lol
today I happened upon a video of fluffy iglesias from mexico who has a nice collection of 30 vdub busses he happened to mention that when volkswagen was making these vehicles in brasil there was no respect for the build protocols, where you could find different year fronts compared to the back,in other words terrible stuff so if your buddy got these heads from brasil that may be part of the problem as to this mangled spring…just a though I am no mechanic just a satisfied viewer keep up the nice work !!!

I had that happen on my Cessna 150, getting back to the airport was a bit of a nail biter!
Thank God you got that out of there. I was going nuts. Lol.

Feed a small dia. rope or cord through the spark plug hole and rotate the engine until it stops.

its all the high grade china parts lol…
Not enough tempering on the spring, IE….too hard and brittle.
Is that a barn swallow nest? I used to drive a vw back in the late 60s. Heads kept pulling the head bolts out of the block.
takes all of 10sec to be sure it is on tdca t #1
140psi air in the spark plug hole will hold the valve closed while you put the new valve spring on
